How the extraction works

Two different products get sold under the word extractor. Worth knowing which one you are using.

Speech recognition takes the audio and guesses at the words. It works on any video, costs real compute, and gets names and jargon wrong. Caption extraction reads the subtitle file YouTube already generated or received from the creator. It is instant, free, and exact, but it only works where a caption track exists.

This extractor does the second. When you open a video, it asks for the caption tracks attached to that video ID, picks your language, and lays the lines out as blocks of 15 to 25 seconds cut on sentence boundaries rather than on the raw caption timings. Raw YouTube captions arrive in fragments of a few words, which is unreadable in bulk. Regrouping them is most of what turns caption data into something you would paste into a document.

Accuracy, honestly

Automatic captions are good and not perfect. Proper nouns, product names and accented speech are where they slip, and no extractor can fix that after the fact, because the mistake is already baked into YouTube's caption file. Creator-uploaded subtitles are usually cleaner, and the picker shows which one you are reading.

One thing to check before quoting anybody: punctuation in automatic captions is inferred, so a sentence boundary in the text is a machine's opinion, not the speaker's pause. Click the timestamp and listen before it goes in an article.

What is a YouTube transcript extractor?

A tool that pulls the caption track of a video out as readable text. Extraction reads what YouTube already stores, which is why it takes seconds. It is not the same as transcribing audio from scratch with a speech model.

Is there a YouTube transcript extractor Chrome extension?

This is one. It adds a side panel on the video page with the transcript, search, copy, TXT export, an AI summary and the creator's tags. It runs on Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc and Vivaldi.

Can I extract a transcript from any video?

Only from videos that have captions. If the uploader disabled them and automatic captioning failed, there is nothing stored to extract. Music videos and noisy recordings fail most often.

Does extracting a transcript need an account?

No. There is no login, no email field and no paywall. The daily caps are 80 transcripts, 150 tag lookups and 20 summaries, and they reset at midnight UTC.

Can it extract subtitles as an SRT file?

Not today. The export is plain .txt. If you need SRT or VTT with timing blocks for a video editor, a dedicated subtitle downloader is the right tool and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Does the extension see my browsing history?

No. Fetching captions sends the ID of the video you have open plus an anonymous install ID used for rate limiting. No history, no profile, no watch log.
